Did You Know?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, over 23 million Americans struggle with some form of drug and alcohol abuse. Only a portion of those individuals will receive treatment.

The main barrier that stands in the way of substance use treatment is money. However, with the help of the right health insurance, drug and alcohol rehab coverage are possible.

You can receive the mental health care or outpatient services you need to work toward recovery. This is why Sunshine Rehab is happy to work directly with your insurance company to ensure they provide coverage for your drug and alcohol rehab today.

What is Blue Cross Blue Shield Addiction Treatment Insurance?

Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) insurance companies offer coverage for more than 100 million Americans daily, including group health plans and a federal employee program. 9 out of every 10 medical professionals are included in the Blue Cross Blue Shield network, which means the possibility of the best treatment centers for your needs is most likely included in BCBS insurance coverage.

The amount of coverage you have can vary widely based on where you live, whether your preferred addiction treatment provider is in or out-of-network, the length of your rehab stay, and your insurance plan level. The medical costs of drug and alcohol addiction treatment will vary from person to person and will also depend on the rehab center, the type of program, and which addiction treatment services are received.

Blue Cross Blue Shield also offers two amazing resources for individuals with BCBS coverage. There is the online Substance Use Resource Center and Blue Distinction Center program. Through the Substance Use Resource Center, a person seeking treatment or their family members can access educational resources about substance addiction and nearby rehab facilities. Blue Distinction Centers are recognized by BCBS as offering some of the highest quality care among their in-network providers.

Types of Blue Cross Blue Shield Health Insurance Plans

BCBS

BCBS insurance plans fall into two main categories: Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) and a Preferred Provider Organization (PPO). Both HMO and PPO clarify the network of care an insurance company will pay for. This is not the direct health insurance provider, but rather a list of doctors that insurers will work with.

HMO

HMO insurance policies limit the type of care and doctors that will be covered to a very specific network. This means your insurance plan requires you receive a referral from your primary care physician for any specialist care. You will also most likely have to pay for out-of-network care.

PPO

PPO policies will offer more coverage for out-of-network specialists without a clinical assessment for care, but you will still receive the best support from insurance providers for in-network care. In-network care means the healthcare provider has an established relationship with the insurance company and therefore has agreed on fixed costs of care.

Addiction Treatment Cost

Since the passing of the Affordable Care Act in 2014, health insurance companies are not allowed to charge a premium or deny care for pre-existing conditions. Due to the mental health and substance addiction treatment services required to treat substance use disorders, they are required to be treated as pre-existing mental health conditions.

When searching for a rehab facility, the possibility of paying out-of-pocket for drug or alcohol addiction treatment can seem daunting. But with the help of a BCBS insurance plan, you have an even greater opportunity to access the addiction treatment providers you need.

State-funded health programs outside of insurance, like Medicare and Medicaid, can also be used to cover basic rehab costs, along with outpatient treatment. Please note that Sunshine Rehab does not accept Medicaid for addiction treatment.

Your preferred addiction treatment facility should work with you to develop a payment plan or seek out other public assistance if your insurance coverage does not include behavioral health care. Money should not be the thing that stands in the way of you receiving the care you need.
